Retailing in Switzerland has got tougher over the past few years, mainly due to the strong Swiss franc (or the weak euro), which has been driving local consumers across the border to shop in the less costly eurozone. A more recent trend is that Swiss brick-and-mortar stores are getting hurt by the fast growing online business. Two fashion retailers about to shut down their stores name not just internet shops in general, but Zalando, the Berlin-based fashion, shoe and sporting goods retailer, in particular as the reason for their closure. Jeans & Co with its 12 outlets around the country and Jamarico, a fashion retailer with three stores in Zurich have decided to close their businesses by the end of this month. According to Handelszeitung, management blamed Zalando “which dealt us the deadly blow”.
