This month, online retailer Zalando is starting a pilot project for same-day delivery in Berlin and Cologne. Customers ordering by early afternoon should receive their merchandise the same evening. For the time being, that service is free of charge. If it proves successful, the Berlin-based company intends to expand the offer to other German cities and metropolitan areas.
Meanwhile, Zalando continues to de-centralize its distribution center network with the opening of a new facility in the town of Lahr, Baden in fall 2016. It has a total surface of 100,000 square meters. Simultaneously, it intends to open a further center in northern Italy next year. The move is seen as a test for opening more logistics centers in foreign markets to serve them better and in a more efficient manner.
